Last Day to Play!

This will be a catch up week of some older photos and some more recent ones. A little random, but that has been the way our week has kind of gone!

First of all, here are a few pictures from when we were in northern Minnesota for Grace and Ethans birthday party. Sitting on the step with Grace.

Driving topless around the house...Aiden started it ;)

Our little family before we left.

After we came back from South Dakota, Brendan had his last soccer game for the season. They didn't win, but they sure had improved from the beginning of the season! The boys all played hard and had a lot of fun.

We've stayed busy working on the duplex. Much progress has been made, but still much more to go. The tenants really left the place a mess, here are a few pics I took just to document it:

Last Friday morning we met a bunch of neighbors at a local park to watch a kids magician. I've actually seen him three times now, total kid humor! The boys had a great time at the show and playing at the park afterwards.

Last Friday evening our nephew Bryce came to help us out at the duplex for the weekend. The boys (especially Brendan) love it when he visits - he plays legos with them; and what could be better than that! He was a huge help at the duplex, everything from ripping out carpet, painting doors, installing pergo floor, you name it. Thanks Bryce!

Yesterday was our last full day of having the boys with us as they are they are going to the UP for a visit with Grandma Donna and Grandpa Herb. We tried to fit in some fun play with them. I took them to an indoor play area during the day to burn off some energy and get some of the sillies out.

The kids have been feeling very artsy this week so we've done a LOT of painting and papercrafts. Brendan has worked on some projects to enter in the county fair and Aiden just likes to paint everything in sight!

After a nice family dinner we headed out on our bikes for the park. We haven't biked too much this year, mostly due to just being busy and Aiden not wanting to ride his bike. He had two bad falls on it early in the spring and that kind of put the brakes on his biking desire. Thankfully his interest and confidence have risen again and off we went! This park is the only park I know of with no monkey bars - making it not a 'real park' in Brendans book.

We leave this afternoon for WI to meet Donna and Herb and they will be taking the boys up north on Saturday... so many mixed emotions from a mom who is always with the boys! What to do during the day while they are gone... actually, I have a huge list of projects I would like to work on; funny how that list is so easy to make. And the evenings will be pretty full with helping out at the duplex with Wellyn. Hopefully we will get it all done before the boys come back.

South Dakota Trip

Here are a few pictures from Brendans' soccer games last Saturday. The team did really well even though they were down a few kids. It was so exciting to see them playing better and actually scoring! Brendans' favorite part is being the goalie - he really goes after the ball.

We left last Sunday for a sight-seeing trip in Western South Dakota. The boys were very excited about going although they didn't really understand everything we were going to see. The last days before we left they were packing everything under the sun to go! Our first night was spent in Kadoka, SD. You can tell we're on vacation when breakfast at the hotel starts with mini-donuts!

On from there to the Badlands. Breath-taking, awe-inspiring and quite hot while wee were there. The kids weren't too excited about this at first, but quickly got into 'exploring' ;)

On our way from the Badlands to Hill City we made a quick stop at the Dinosaur Park in Rapid City. The kids thought it was cool. We ate lunch at the cafe and the kids picked out some dinosaur shirts before we hopped back in the car for the hotel.

Our first morning in Hill City took us just a few blocks away for a ride on the 1880s train. It was the first time any of us had been on a train before and the kids were pretty excited... at first. As the train ride progressed they became a little less impressed with the whole thing ;) The scenery was nice and we learned some new things about the history of the area.

Brendan taking a break from looking out the window to read his lego magazine ;)

That evening we stopped in at Reptile Gardens. This was a huge hit with the kids.

Aiden checking out a huge green frog.

Brendan touching a Ball Python. Aiden wanted nothing to do with it!

After looking at some of the indoor creatures we headed out and caught the alligator show. This was rather entertaining and afterwards the kids had the opportunity to touch a small alligator. Aiden was not convinced touching an alligator was the thing to do! Maybe this means he won't be bringing creepy-crawling things home with him.

There were steps down under the prairie dog habitat and you could go up into this bubble to see them up close. The kids really liked this, especially since we'd seen a ton of prairie dogs at one of the rest areas on our way out there.

We were able to get up close with three of the tortises living there. Here is one that is 45 years old.

Aiden playing in the crazy mirrors - what a big head he has!!

Next morning we were off to Mount Rushmore - obviously!

A view from up close on the Presidential Trail and one from one of the little 'caves' made from the rubble of the blasting.

A huge mountain with some faces on it was not Aidens' idea of a great vacation... neither was a long walk with a lot of steps.

Leaving Mount Rushmore we took Iron Mountain road and then Needles Highway for some very scenic places. Here are some of the burros on the road through Custer State Park.

We stopped at Cathedral Spires to get out after Aidens' nap and do a little hiking in between rain showers.

Slyvan Lake; we only stopped here briefly due to the rain and everyone being hungry.

Brendan has been wanting to see dinosaur bones for a long time... he was very excited when we parked the car and told him we were going to see some. He had to 'get ready' and find a pen and notepad so he could write down the names of what he saw. Some T-rex up close!

A 'Terrible Crocodile'... yeah, no kidding!

Aiden just loved pretending to unearth a dinosaur skeleton; he did this pretty much the whole time we were there.

A trip back to the hotel for dinner, a swim in the pool and then out for ice cream and we were ready to walk around Hill City a little bit. It's a cute little town with lots of tourist shops, antique places and just fun artsy stores. The is a hybrid metal sculpture on the sidewalk I absolutely fell in love with!

Our last day in the area we started out at Bear Country. The kids liked it since they were able to unbuckle while we drove through and see the animals up close - very close!

Hanging out with the mascot - Aiden is not a fan of these mascots; won't go near them unless someone is holding him and won't touch them at all!

One of the baby wolves peeking out.

This was by far the best $2 we spent the whole trip - the kids got to be pulled behind a big mower and they thought it was great.

It started to rain and storm as we left Bear Country so what better thing to do next than head to a cave! We went to Sitting Bull Crystal Caverns so Brendan could see what a cave was like and see some of the real 'crystals'. It certainly isn't the most glamorous cave out there, but perfect for his first time. I think it was shocking for him since he kind of had a different idea of what it would look like from the lego movies of the Power Miners and Rock Monsters. It was A LOT of steep steps down, but he did awesome and Aiden was very brave being carried by his very brave father!

From there we went to the Air and Space Museum... another place Brendan took his notepad and pen to write everything down ;) Aiden hid behind the sign since he wasn't in the mood for a picture.

Aiden really liked the bombs...

but that wore off pretty quickly!

And then off to Keystone and a visit at the Presidential Wax Museum. The kids with President Obama.

We left not so early on Friday for Minnesota and stopped at Wall Drug for lunch and some fun. It was pouring by the time we were done eating so we just got back on the road.

All in all, it was a great trip with a lot of memories made. There were still things we just didn't have time to do, but there will always be next time! One highlight of the trip was a stop in Mitchell, SD, to see long-time friend Jodie. I can't believe we didn't take one picture! It was nice to see her in person if only for a short time and I hope to get to see her again sometime soon as we all make our travels.

Needless to say, our 4th has been pretty low-key. We didn't get home until 12:30am today and the kids weren't back to bed until 1:30am... Aiden was wide awake and apparently bitten by the silly bug so it was over another hour before he fell asleep. I think we'll skip the fireworks tonight and do some outside tomorrow instead. Have a happy and safe holiday!

A Week Behind!

I know I'm running behind this week; so goes life! Two weeks ago Aiden had the stomach flu... causing lost sleep, an increase in laundry and household chores put on hold. He was better by the weekend so we packed up and headed to northern Minnesota to visit friend Erik and Jessica for their kids birthday party. Ethan just turned 1 and Grace is now a big 3. We had a fabulous time visiting, eating cake, watching the kids play and touring their house and seeing all the renovations they have made. The kids had a grand time playing outside in between rain showers and after gift-opening, playing with all the new toys!

Here is Grace getting ready to blow out her candles.

Ethan having his turn!

Ethan and grandpa...

Grace and Aiden going shirtless on the new birthday wheels.

We spent the remainder of the weekend doing things around the house: washing all the windows inside and out; powerwashing the house; edging the driveway; mowing, etc. A very productive day!

And what is a day of work if it's not followed by a little 'play'?? We lit the fire and sat around relaxing until after dark. The kids had a blast since we never let them stay up that late!

Our little family of ducks watches for us all day. The ducklings are over half the size of their mom and practically run across the water when they see us come out. They are hilarious to watch - racing to get each piece of bread. The momma duck will not eat any of the bread, but just watches to make sure her babies are safe. The neighbor kids love to come over and feed them too. We go out at least every other day to feed them and watch them.

I'm also behind on getting flowers in the ground this year! A trip to Lowes fixed that in no time. I am most excited about my two hanging baskets - they were a steal! All because they were a little dry.
My $2 one:

And the $1.50 fuschia:

Father's Day is always a hit here. The boys love shopping for their dad and buying tools! After church and lunch it was finally time to open gifts. Then it was time to try out all the gifts: the pole saw and weed puller were the most used. Dinner of lasagna followed by cake completed the day.

We also started a new house project - finishing off one wall of the garage. We have everything moved away from the wall now and Wellyn has started running the wires so we will have electrical outlets! Very exciting since we only have one outlet in the entire garage currently. Within the next few weeks we should be able to finish running the wires, get the insulation in and then on to drywall.

The following Tuesday Brendan woke me up before 6am with a sick tummy... the flu visited him too. It took several days before he was on the mend and we missed a couple of soccer games and some playdates. What a terrible time to get sick - no child should be sick during summer!

Brendan has spent afternoons this week at a Lego/Mathematics camp through the city parks and rec. The worst part of it is the camp has been held outside under a pavillion, the hottest week of summer - temps most days over 90 degrees! He's had an awesome time and I hope they do the camp again next summer. They've learned card tricks based on math, built moving merry-go-round, a mixer and some math magic tricks. Yesterday morning they spent some time in the sprinkler cooling off.

In the midst of all this we've been dealing with one set of tenants that are continually behind on rent. They are just about moved out (thankfully!) so it appears we won't have to go through the formal eviction process. Unfortunately, they've trashed the place. Not terrible, but enough small things that will require a good day of repair, along with the required cleaning, painting and possible carpet removal.

Tomorrow we have soccer tournaments; one game in the morning and one in the afternoon. Their team has played hard all season. Last Tuesday was a tough game for them; they had several shots on goal, but not one made it through. Of course it was super hot and they were all dragging by the end; especially Brendan who wasn't quite up to par from being sick.

Sunday we leave for South Dakota. We're going to take the boys out to see the sites for our first family vacation not to Michigan in several years. They are very excited, counting down the days, packing all sorts of clothes and toys... I will need to go through the suitcases again and weed out some things! We'll be staying in Hill City the majority of the trip so if I'm not too exhausted I may update on the road!

Upper Michigan in June

Last week was spent visiting with family and friends in Wisconsin and Michigan. Even being there a week it is never enough time to fit everything and everyone in! We sure tired though. Our first stop was to visit Colin, Stacey and Ellie. The kids had lots of energy to spare even though the adults were much more tired - wouldn't it be great to tap into their energy?? Outside we went for a little walk down the street!

Meanwhile, Colin mowed their grass at lightening speed! The boys conned their way into a cruise around the yard...

Relaxing on the swing.

The next stop on our adventure took us to Peshtigo to visit with my sister and her family for a bit. Preston, awesome cousin he is, took the boys to Badger Park to play while the grown-ups visited and unloaded the car. She found a ton of trophies and dog ring gates out here in the cities for free so I picked them up for the 4-H club and delivered them - good thing we were driving home two SUVs! We took Preston with us for a visit up north and off we were again. This time we stopped at Wellyns' parents briefly to drop off the good old Mountaineer to its' new owner, Ashley.

We made it to my parents' house for dinner on Monday. We filled up the week with sightseeing and visiting and since I have so many pictures I'll just skip to them!

Here we are at Palms Brook State Park outside Manistique, MI. It's been a few years since I've been there and they have made several improvements on the raft including putting a cover over it, handy since it started sprinkling while were out on it. The mosquitoes were out in full force; Wellyn ran up to the gift shop for some spray so we wouldn't be totally eaten alive.

In case you're not familiar with the area, here's a little bit about The Big Spring aka Kitch-iti-kipi:
Two hundred feet across, the 40-foot deep Kitch-iti-kipi is Michigan's largest freshwater spring. Over 10,000 gallons a minute gush from fissures in the underlying limestone. The flow continues throughout the year at a constant 45 degree Fahrenheit

A view down at the bottom of the spring and some of the large trout swimming around.

Brendan manning the raft to get across.

My mom, me and Aiden looking down the center of the raft to see the trout and bubbling bottom.

That night we took the boys downtown to play for a little bit. The church we were married in has expanded their playground so the boys couldn't wait to go try it out.

Preston and my mom hit Gulliver Lake while we were gone... all those trout got them thinking of fishing! Preston was top fisherman, bringing in two pike and one bass - all without a landing net in the rowboat; I know, wish I would have been there (in a separate boat) filming that!

Hearing all the fist stories, the boys were anxious to go fishing the next day. However, the boat wasn't quite ready to hit the icy water yet. So, the boys helped Grandma dig some worms and we took off for Garlyn Zoo in Naubinway, MI. It was our first visit and the boys had a good time. There was quite a variety of animals housed along the wooded trails and an abundance of chickens, peacocks and guinea hens running around at will. Feeding the goats is always popular.

The not so friendly llama.

The super loud geese honking up a storm to beg some food.

Aiden getting ready to put his apple down the tube to feed the black bear.

The very lazy black bear that just kind of leaned over and rolled the apple to him, not giving us a good photo op!

The sitka deer that I fell in love with. There were several little babies all spotted and cute in the pen too.

One of the many resident peacocks just hanging out on the path. I love peacocks, only because I have so many memories of waking up super early at my grandfathers' peacock farm to them being so noisy when he went out to feed them.

After the zoo and lunch we headed back to Gulliver and pulled in just as the rest of the fam was launching the boat at the landing. Wellyn all ready to brave the water and help the guys put in the boat lift.

Preston taking Brendan for a little boat ride.

Brendan rowing with a little help.

The guys putting the lift in.

Scaring the boys that they are going to get dropped in the water.

And finally, what they had been waiting for, a ride in the boat!

Later in the evening we went for a fishing trip. Brendan caught this little perch right away and that was it for a long time. He did have a bass at one point, but it shook hook while jumping around. Preston caught one other little perch (maybe the same one??) and that was it for the night.

Aiden was addicted to digging for worms, found it much more fun than actually going out in the boat to fish.

The boys rockin' out in the big teepees outside Big Boy after having some dessert.

Friday we headed back to Wellyns' parents to visit with everyone there. It was a special trip since Ashley was home on his last leave before flying to Pakistan for the next year and a half to be stationed at the US Embassy. He will take all our love, thoughts and good wishes over there with him as we pray for his safety as well as that of all the other service members working to protect our freedom. We are looking forward to 'seeing' him on the computer with Skype.
The boys wasted no time in wrestling with him.

Maxwell hugging Uncle Ashley ;)

Brendan getting a backrub from Grandma Donna and Ellie.

Getting a picture of Ellie sitting with someone is much harder these days, you have just a few seconds before she's ready to get down and play! She has places to go and things to explore. A quick shot of her and Ashley.

Trying out the hoola hoop.

Max hugging his mom, Lindsey, giving me his scrunchy face smile (my personal favorite). Too cute!

Ellie and Stacey paused for a quick smile and photo ;)

Levi lifting up Brendan with one arm... muscles!

Wrestling with two uncles, what could be better? The wild play of boys...

Lindsey and Stacey going for a walk with the little ones to see the new sandbox, swing and slide at Maxs' house.

Aiden got right to work!

Max lending a hand.

Aiden with the little green inch-worm he found in the sandbox.

Checking out the bugs on the apple tree - yuk!

Saturday morning brought about the end of the first Pomeroy Biggest Loser. We started at the beginning of the year and have all been exercising ever since. The 'final' event was a two-mile run to see who could improve their time the most. That percentage was added to the personal percentage of weight loss and the number of exercise hours. It was a painful event (for me!), but everyone finished with better than their beginning times. Colin won the 2 mile race, but Wellyn won the overall title of Pomeroy Biggest Loser! Here we are afterwards.

Uncle Levi took the boys out to his old fort on the 4-wheeler. Brendan LOVES the fort! He has big plans for it too, like reinforcing the floor to put in a mini-hottub and all sorts of other super cool mini- amenities!

We had a wonderful visit with family from Wellyns' dads side; aunts, uncles, cousins and little ones we don't always get to see. It was fun to have everyone together, catch up and relax as the kids went wild ;) I even got to hold their cousins' little baby, Luke.

Little Max looking just adorable during the festivities.

Kids are drawn to Ashley like a magnet; he's just too cool! Here he is with his phone after having the kids yell as loud and as long as they could while he took a movie of them. Boys Carson and Brent joined the crew, very special to see how well Carson is doing these days.

A trip outside since they were all revved up. A game that was to try to spill his beer - little do they know he's had lots of practice holding a bottle of beer.

Ellie not too happy to be inside while the kids were outside!

Ashley getting a little help from cousin-in-law Phillip.

For whatever reason Aiden decided to show everyone his dinosaur underwear during the game.

Sunday morning brought the whole family to church where Max was baptised. The little ones all did really well through church, certainly livening it up a bit.

Lindsey and Maxwell all dressed up!

Getting a picture of the kids all dressed up and together was a challenge. I should have tried to do it before the baptism!

Sports of All Sorts!

Summer is definitely here; the weather is warm, the birds are singing, baby ducks are all over the pond - and our schedules are out of control! Thankgoodness school is almost over for the year so we'll have one less thing to get ready for.

Brendan joined soccer last week with his buddy Mason. They have such a great time together and it's a nice way for them to stay friends since they don't go to the same school or live in the same neighborhood. It was huge success, Brendan had a great time and didn't ask to go home or have Wellyn go out on the field with him one time!

We had a nice long holiday weekend here playing and catching up on some chores around the house. We missed going to Michigan, but are going there this weekend for a week to visit with everyone.

Here is Brendan doing some drawing:

Having some fun on the much loved, much used monkey bars:

Aiden is a little too small to do the monkey bars by himself, but he sure loves to swing!

Tuesday I had a new experience - getting rear-ended! Luckily the boys weren't with me and we weren't going fast so it wasn't too bad. The truck hit the metal post on our bumper where our bike rack which saved my car and did some damage to the one behind me. It was an amiable accident at least and he's paying for a new post for the rack so all is well that ends with no one getting hurt. And no damage was done before we decided to sell it.

Last Thursday was Track and Field Day at Brendans' school. It is a super crazy day with kids all over! The first through fifth graders all go out together in the morning to compete in events and try to place. Each grade has a specific color shirt in order to help keep track of them all. The kindergartners came out after their lunch and after the other grades went in for their turn. The three classes did great and had a lot of fun. Here is Brendan going through the obstacle course:

And kicking the soccer ball!

Here he is doing the dash, smiling the whole way. They did it about six times and then had them run around the track - everyone was TIRED!

That same night we were off to Aidens' last basketball class. He is so funny! He tries so hard to do everything... he is so much smaller than the other kids and gets a little distracted, but sure works hard ;) He got a little help from daddy every now and then!

Practicing the bounce pass and chest pass - mostly just the bounce pass, which might have been called the 'chin pass'!

The long weekend started off with finishing the painting in Brendans' room.

The weekend wasn't all work - we headed to our friends' house on Saturday afternoon and had a great BBQ with lots of great food and even better company. Everyone has kids now so it is so much fun. The kids were all over playing and having a blast!

Sunday brought dry paint and Brendan getting his room back. It was so nice to get it done and move everything from our room back into his! He was so excited about getting the loft set up again. He really wanted a 'lego themed room', but it is really hard to find lego blankets, etc, so he went with a construction theme. I still have a few lego-related suprises in store for him ;)

Monday we did some things around the house and went car shopping in the afternoon. We've been planning on replacing the Mountaineer for a while now and with some big driving trips coming up this summer it seemed the right time to do it. We did some research and searching to find what we wanted and were able to find 'the one' at a metro dealership. After test-driving and getting the boys stamp of approval (they really like the built-in DVD player!) we made the decision to buy! Due to it being a holiday we weren't able to actually take it home then but are going tonight to get it. Yeah!!!

Last night was Brendans' first soccer game - after just one practice! It was so much fun watching the kids run all over. They don't play positions at this age, so it's literally a swarm of boys following and kicking the ball. He tried hard and ran hard! Didn't always go the right direction or stop when the whistle blew, but he still had fun. We'll miss next weeks game due to traveling, but are looking forward to the rest of the season.

Aiden kicking the ball back and forth with friend Gracie.

The two boys, hopefully friends forever!

It will be over a week before the next post. The UP has such slow internet connections that I'll just wait until we get back to update the site. Have a great week!

Boys and Boston

So, did you think I wasn't going to post??? I have a routine when it comes to posting, usually starting on a Monday or Tuesday evening while Wellyn is playing with the boys before bed. I go through the pictures, resize them and try to summarize what we've been up to. My routine was a little off last week - obviously!

We'll start the week before and work our way forwards since that is the order the pictures loading in ;)

The boys love getting out their 'tools' and 'fixing' things. This day it was the tractor and gator. They really got into it, one of the neighbor boys even came down and helped.

Brendans' kindergarten class has been doing a unit on transportation. One of his homework assignments was to build some type of car, bus, plane, etc out of a cardboard box and bring it to school to wear in a parade. I'm not sure if I've mentioned he likes legos (hehe), but they have some new construction vehicles out so he decided he would like a bulldozer. We sorted through some boxes and found some leftover yellow paint in the basement to get us started. The boys had way more fun just painting the extra boxes than actually doing the bulldozer.

Here is Aidens' smiley face - the eyes kind of got connected to the smile, but still cute!

Last Monday Wellyn flew to Boston for a work conference, lucky dog! In between conferences, meetings, lectures he managed to fit in some sight-seeing along with some awesome East Coast food. Here is Boston Common and a statue of George Washinton.

I think this bridge was in You've Got Mail.

Then he was off to tour Fenway Park, the oldest ballpark in the USA.

The only picture of him in Boston...

Meanwhile, back in Minnesota Brendan had his transportation parade. All the kindergartners sang transportation related songs and took turns having big 'parts' in the performance. Brendan wrote a little story about a bulldozer that he read in front of everyone. He did awesome! I'll have the video of it soon, but here is a picture Aiden took ;)

Back in Boston on Saturday, Wellyn took the Freedom Trail for the majority of the day. The conference was over so he was able to take in some of the historic sites of the city.

The boys really missed their dad (I did too!) so we made him some welcome home signs. They had lots of fun picking out stickers, markers and drawing all sorts of things on them.

Our future photographer took a picture of us too ;)

Sping Work, Soccer and Legos - of course!

Spring is most definitely here - yeah! The weather has been so much warmer the past week. A few days with rain, but good for growing nice green grass! Spring also brings a bunch of projects to work on. Last Saturday was cool, but sunny so we hauled a few trailer loads of black dirt to the backyard to fill in some low spots. The kids had fun helping; using their Gator and Tractor to haul dirt to the back and dump it.

And it's important to have your eyes well protected on a sunny day...

We've been thinking about getting Brendan a loft for his bedroom for a while now and came across a deal too good to pass up. Of course, a new bed means a new bedroom! Aiden has been wanting a 'bigger boy' type room since he's not a 'baby' anymore so we decided to switch their bedrooms. Aiden is moving into the 'car' painted room and Brendan wants us to paint legos on the walls of Aidens' old room. I'm not going to be painting legos on walls, but we are looking at ways to make it a cool, bigger boy room. We have the wallpaper from Aidens wall of baby jungle animals all down and are still deciding on paint colors. Here are the boys trying out the new loft right after we got it!

Tuesday night was Aidens' last soccer class. Brendan and I tagged along to cheer for him and take some photos. He did really well, all proud that he was in the spotlight ;) His favorite part of soccer is 'trapping' (stopping) the ball. He does it ALL the time!

A highlight of the night was taking a trip to Dairy Queen afterwards - a favorite for all of us!

Donna and Herb were out for a night last week on their way to Mayo and took us out to dinner. A real treat for me since I wasn't in the mood to cook ;) The boys lobbied and convinced us to go to Chilis - their new favorite restraunt. The boys were cute - trying out their big-boy manners and getting a lot of positive attention for them.

The same day, Brendan got his new Lego magazine in the mail with a building challenge in it... building something related to Spongebob - right up his alley! He and I started the legs and Herb and he did the bulk of the work designing and building the body. It turned our really cute and I'm going to send it in for the challenge.

Thursday was a dress-up day for school, Tacky Thursday. Brendan wasn't sure if he wanted to do it, but when he was going through his clothes he found the soccer socks from Aunt Stacey and thought they would be perfect. He added the shirt, some shorts and some crazy hair and he was ready to go.
